Abstract
XX a. pirmoje pusėje. Išsikelti uždaviniai: Aptarti Mikalinos Glemžaitės aplinką ir šeimą XIX a. pab. − XX a. pr.; Išnagrinėti M. Glemžaitės pedagoginio darbo eigą ir bruožus Lietuvoje, Rusijoje, Šiaurės Kaukaze XX a. pirmoje pusėje; Išanalizuoti M. Glemžaitės indėlį į tautinio meno ir tautinio kostiumo populiarinimą XX a ; Aptarti M. Glemžaitės kraštotyrinio darbo pusę; Išryškinti M. Glemžaitės visuomeniškumą ir švietėjišką darbą.

Mikalina Glemžaitė (1891-1985) was a teacher, a lecturer, an ethnographer, a promoter of the national costume, and a member of Lithuanian Riflemen‘s Union. Even though she did not have the highest education, she was engaged in pedagogical, ethnographic, and public activities at the same time, pursuing her high ideals. As a pedagogue of handicrafts and a researcher and folk art promoter, she attempted to prove the importance of folk art and instigated admiration for it in various ways. Her personality reflects a number of intriguing processes, starting with public activeness at the beginning of the 20th century in Kupiškis and complicated processes of establishing schools, following the experiences of war refugees and the destiny during WWI, until the special atmosphere of the Interwar period (1918-1940), pervaded with nationalism ideas. The aim of the present thesis is to reveal Mikalina Glemžaitė‘s pedagogic, ethnographic, and public activities during the first half of the 20th century. In order to reach the aim, the following objectives have been formulated: to discuss Glemžaitė‘s environment and family at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century; to analyse Glemžaitė‘s pedagogic activity and features in Lithuania, Russia, and Northern Caucasus during the first half of the 20th century; to analyse Glemžaitė‘s contribution to the populiarization of folk art of the national costume in the 20th century; to discuss Glemžaitė‘s ethnographic activities; to emphasise her social character and educative activities.
Glemžaitė, who grew up in Kupiškis, in a public family, felt the importance of public activity and science early in life. As a pedagogue of handicrafts and sewing, she maintained her position firmly: to populiarise Lithuanian folk art and inspire the youth to love it. In the 1930s, the ideas of nationalism and suggestions to focus on the national heritage prevailed in Lithuania, which created favourable conditions to instigate the society‘s interest in national art. Mikalina Glemžaitė was one of the most active ethnographers and creators and promoters of the national costume. As a noticeable promoter of folk art, she attempted to draw people‘s admiration for national art forms and contributed to the awakening of national self-perception. Membership in the Lithuanian Riflemen‘s Union provided even more possibilities for Glemžaitė to disseminate her ideas in society. Her clear functions in the Riflemen’s Union reveal other aspects of the organization, i.e. taking care of folk art. Glemžaitė‘s and the Riflemen’s Union attitudes coincided on these educational activities. The slogan “educate yourself and educate others,” which was rooted in Glemžaitė‘s attitude since her youth, was one of the most essential principles of the Riflemen’s Union.
