Abstract
The term popular science is usually referred to the presentation of the scientific content and developments to the general audience outside the academic community. Therefore, popular scientific discourse can be treated as a tool shaping the lay society‘s view towards science and academic research. In order to provide popular scientific texts to the non-specialist audience in a clear and understandable manner, the authors often use various explanation strategies. Moreover, in order to engage the reader and make the scientific content interesting, the authors of popular scientific texts use reader engagement strategies and also include non-verbal elements such as photos, various other illustrations or videos. The aim of this thesis is to analyse and compare the selected popular scientific articles in the fields of medicine and environment, applying multimodal discourse analysis. The data for this research has been collected from 84 English popular scientific articles (42 articles in the field of medicine and 42 articles in the field of environment). The articles have been collected from 7 different popular science websites: Popular Science, How Stuff Works, Scientific American, Science News, Science Daily, New Scientist and Live Science. In the theoretical part of this thesis the term multimodal discourse analysis has been defined and the main features of this approach have been discussed, based on the academic works of the initiators of multimodality, Kress and van Leeuween, and scientific articles by other scholars. Furthermore, in the theoretical chapter the main characteristics of popular scientific discourse have been discussed in comparison to academic discourse. As the most important theoretical material for this part of thesis, scientific works by the leading researcher in the academic discourse, Hyland, have been used. In the present paper both non-verbal and verbal elements of popular scientific articles have been investigated. The most dominant features of illustrations found in the articles and their functions have been discussed. In the analysis of the verbal mode, writer-oriented features of interaction and reader-oriented features of interaction are given special focus.
