Abstract
Russian amateur musicianship in Kaunas was developed after the model of the Russian Musical Society and conservatories in Moscow and St. Petersburg established in 1859 by Nicholas and Anton Rubinstein. It was inseparable from the activities of the Kaunas Musical Society, which until now has been neglected in historiography. The micro-history of the Kaunas Musical Society presented in this article, which aims to reveal the circumstances of the establishment of this society and its activities, fills one of the gaps of 19th century Kaunas historiography and provides a better understanding of the overall state of musical culture in Kaunas at that time. The Society’s early years, 1866–1873, were based on leisure and charitable activities. The Society was officially created on 15 March 1882, when the Society of Music Lovers was reorganized as the Kaunas Musical Society, along the lines of the Minsk Musical Society, by request of Governor Valerijonas Melnickis. The composer Alexander Savinskis, an influential member of many official societies and an honorary member of governmental institutions, became the chairman of Kaunas Musical Society. The goal of establishing a musical school, which would have opened the way for the professional musical education, can be regarded as the one of the Society’s significant tasks. An endowment for victims of the Grodno fire, a contribution to the establishment of a care home for children, and cultural education of the public through musical-literary evenings organized in the city can be mentioned as other important achievements of the Society. In 1904, the Kaunas Musical Society ended its activities and the Society of Fine Art Lovers was established instead. Its aim was to promote the arts, including literature, drama, music, and painting.
